Catching the Big One at Fish Lake

Aptly named, Fish Lake is one of Utah's most beautiful high alpine lakes. At almost 8,900 ft in elevation, Fish Lake is located in Fishlake National Forest that surrounds this six mile long by one mile wide lake. Known for the sport fishing, the crystal clear waters provide some of the greatest year round fishing in Utah, although because of the heavy snowfall summer is the peak time to visit.

For the true fisherman, no visit to Utah would be complete without the catch of a lifetime which can be found here with the up to 40lb Mackinaw that call this lake home. There are also more than enough Rainbow and Splake trout to go around. Nearby you will find the town of Koosharem which is about 15 miles away that has some amenities for visitors, but for the true experience there is the Fish Lake Lodge right on the lake for lodging and dining. Made of native spruce logs, it is an impressive structure to at least stop by and visit.

Because of the high elevation, the water is not ideal for swimming but that doesn't stop most people during the summertime months but it is great for boating and canoeing with beautiful scenery all around. There are two marinas on the lake as well as other recreational activities such as dining and camping. There are plenty of hiking trails as well as biking in the summer and snowmobiling and cross country skiing in the winter. From bird watching to ice fishing it doesn't get much better than a day at Fish Lake in Utah.
